I've got an 2004 MG TF which has picked up some surface corrosion on the rear subframe and a little on parts of the underside. It's not serious but could do with some improved rust proofing on it to stop it becoming so.

I'm thinking of selling the car but if I can't get what I think it's worth I'll keep it. As a result I'm wondering about spending a few hours underneath to waxoyl it using the wax stuff as opposed to that thick, black, gunky underseal stuff they do.

What I'm concerned about is I try to sell and the underside is coated whether buyers might think I'm trying to cover something nasty up.

Any thoughts?

Take photos of the underside before you coat it?

Yes some will

And even if you take photos some will think you've only shown the best

So many sellers are dishonest and so many buyers untrusting that a honest seller has these problems

You could leave it as it is and make sure the underside is dirty when selling or if you're thinking of keeping it yes take photos, lots of them of the whole underside, then put on the protection you want as whatever you use will make many suspicious so you might as well use what you want

I sold one of my cars (private sale) at a very good price to the buyer yet when the boyfriend turned up deliberately early to collect and I was valeting and polishing the car so it was gleaming for the buyer, he said he didn't realise they were stone chips on the bonnet despite the car also being polished at test drive - I had to explain to him in no uncertain terms that if I'd wanted to hide the stone chips I'd have not polished the car and left a fine film of dust on it which would have hidden them and before he could try the old dropping the price trick I said if he wasn't 100% happy he could tell the girl to keep her money and try and find that model car as good for the same money, he shut up

Good luck with selling, it's a buyers' market but if you don't need to sell stand firm against idiots and con-artists

Yes, that's what I'm afraid of.

Actually it's really not that bad. There's a little surface where the underseal has been subject to lots of stone chipping.

I think I'll wait until I've decided what to do with it and if I'm keeping it make sure it's done before September.

Personally, as a buyer I'd rather see a bit of honest rust than a cover-up job. wink
