As part of general servicing I checked and adjusted the valve clearances on the 1500. I only found one was out and adusted to value in the handbook. However, I ran the engine to check afterwards and it still sounded quite tappety is this normal for these engines?

Not uncommon, especially in comparison to a modern car. My mother's 1500 sounds like a bag of crisps and the clearances are fine and the valve springs are pretty new.

Pretty sure na or wild oliver will be along idc with some more expert advice than a humble dabbler.

it's the wildone for expert advice I'm not even a dabbler

I'm not familar with the (Triumph) 1500 engine, with the A-series engine if you don't hear the tappets then the engine's probably not running

I like the bit about having (hopefully the owners) Handbook (better than the Haynes for regular full and proper servicing schedule)

Tappets can be more noticeable depending on the engine oil, the type of rocker cover, other noises in the car reducing or you (just notice them more)

Keep up the full and proper servicing and maintainence and reffering to the owners Handbook for all things as well as servicing

If it's a sweet sewing machine tappety sound it's fine and normal.

If it's one that keeps clacking away no matter how you adjust it it's a worn rocker.

Cheers guys, I'll ignore it for now although it is quite a loud singular sort of tap (I expect an engine rebuild is on the cards anyway).

Yes na it is the owners Handbook I used (although I do have Haynes as well). For a such a small book it's packed full of information.

perhaps best not to ignore that sort of noise

The Haynes I think is a complimentary book to the owners Handbook

I wish you were there everytime I recommend the owners Handbook to potential, new and longstanding owners of the car as a lot don't realise how good it would be for them to have a copy

In fairness it won't do any harm. But at the same time it's not a hard job to sort.

Fair doz, I wondered if the noise might not be that but something else but on reread the OP I withdraw the idea

It could be little end, unlikely to be big end tbh it's not a tappety sound. In the grand scheme of things however it's going to be a tappet.
