Midget - safety devices cage and harness mounting points
Discussion
Evening all,
As this is my first post I guess I should introduce myself.. I'm J.. and onto my first question:
I'm building a bit of a special out of a 1500 midget.. it's already got a stg 2 unleaded engine and I've dumped the rubber bumpers in the nearest bin (going for the debumpered look) and she'll also be getting lowered on springs at the front and spacers at the back and will if money allows get spax converted all round..
But onto the actual question.. I've recently aquired a safety devices bolt in full cage (FIa type with the diagonal brace), a set of cobra bucket seats and some 4 point harnesses... Seats were pretty easy to fit by bolting the original midget sliders to the bottom of the seats and making suitable spreader bars from 20x50mm 2mm box section to allow the use of the original mounting holes in the floor... and the cage slotted in without too much fuss (just some extra pressure spreading plates welded to the floor panels)... but now I'm stuck!
The bottom mounting for the harnesses are obvious (the std seat belt mounts).. but I cant figure out a suitably strong place to mount the 2 top mounts.. It needs to be level with the shoulder holes in the seats to avoid "spinal compression" if I stuff it... Has anyone done this.. any ideas? Currently my only thought is to weld a tube at the right height across the cage and mount the harnesses to this.. But that would probably require a central brace running forward into/around the gearshift area... which I think would get in my way...
anyway.. if you have done it any hints/piccies would be greatly appreciated.
cheers! J

J, I assume this is going to be some sort of track machine
Some may come along that know all about this and the sports regs

Not so much a track car... more for time trails, hill climbs and sprints.

Mine has a harness fitted with specialy made (and reinforced) holes on the rear bulkhead for the two shoulder straps.

Hi shoestring..
I've seen your car come up on several websites (including ebay).. must be a sad day when yous sell something you've put so much work into and by the looks of it been rewarded with a lot of fun!
Have you got any images of how your harnesses are mounted? I'd be particually interested as your car doesn;t seem to have suffered any isues with scrutineering (something which I guess I'll have to deal with if I want to do any sprints/hillclibs etc.
Cheers!

I'm going to give it a wash in a bit - I'll see if I can get some pictures. However, somewhere like Deamon Tweaks will have all the fittings you need.I've seen your car come up on several websites (including ebay).. must be a sad day when yous sell something you've put so much work into and by the looks of it been rewarded with a lot of fun!
