Better off going through the MG Owners Club classifieds tbh. Any premium that the dealer adds on just isn't worth it - you're a tad more likely to get an honest car from an MG Owners club member than a dealer.

It's all a gamble with private or dealer

how much do you want to pay?
which model?
do you know anything about owning and driving RWD, classics, Spridgets?

Have a second budget for some for servicing and repair just after purchace

Get someone to go with you who really knows about these cars when you find one you're serious about or pay for a professional check

Try to test drive as many good examples as you can and certainly one or two out of your budget to see how good they should be and perhaps that you need to increase your budget or lower your expectations - depending on how much you have to spend

Invest £8 and buy an owners Handbook as it will tell you no end about the car probably more than most owners know about the car - http://www.mgocshop.co.uk/catalog/Online_Catalogue...

MGOC is a good club to join for a one-off fee of £5 but there are other clubs MGCC (more racing types), MASC (more that actually use their cars)

Lots of info here - http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgb...
