K series in MGB

Quick question regarding the K series in the B....
After trawling google and various resulting sites I can't see any reason given for not using the existing gearboox. I know the Ford type 9 is going to be stronger etc etc but is it not possible to use the existing box? No one seems to say why. The only reasons i can think of are either the flywheel is too big for the bellhousing or it can't handle the power? But, there are plenty of B's out there with the original enginges putting out similar (or more) power then the bog standard 1.8k so it can't be that alone.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm looking at pros and cons of an engine swap but don't really want to start hacking about more than i have to and welding in crossmembers fr a new gearbox if I don't have too.....

try asking here - http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgb...
I'm sure it could be done, but is probably more hassle than it's worth especially with the bellhousing and starter motor configuration. You can pick up a nice 5 speed box for very little, and the bellhousings come up cheap on ebay now and again.
Have a look at my site for some pics etc of our K-series race cars.....
