My 90K mile MGF is a little tappety, if you give it a good hard run it quiets down until the car has cooled down then starts again.
I've heard that adding engine flush to the oil before it's changed will clean things out and keep it quiet.

Is this a good idea or an easy way into messing things up?

The K-Series is prone to this kind of noise in Winter and you will notice it more in an F as the engine is directly behind you. The noise should dissapate once the car has reached operating temperature. Chances are your car did not make this ticking type noise over the summer months.

If its been a while, do a complete oil/filter change with a flush through. I always do x2 changes a year - November and then again at the start of the season. Would recommend either Quantum Semi Syn Oil (used in VW and Audi) or apply some Magnatec.

It's been a while, it's a second car so I don't use it much in the comedy weather we get near Aberdeen in winter.
Any reccomended products for flushing?

I would probably stick with Quantum Flush with Quantum Oils. They are very high quality and I've been years it on various cars over the years and no complaints. If its a second car then you deffo want to get this sorted before your start driving it again.... well that will be April then if you are that far north biggrin

This was taken last week, it's apparently worse now! I'm not sure though because I'm stuck on an oil rig and have been for over 3 weeks. Hopefully get home tomorrow if the weather changes!

So April probably isn't far off.

I'll get the oil flushed and changed as soon as I satrt using it again, cheers.

The VVC K-Series can be "tappetty".

Even if your car has been regularly and correctly serviced, at that mileage it may benefit from the Diesel Treatment. By that I mean draing the current oil ( hot ), fit anew Oil Filter and put some good quality DIESEL grade engine oil in the engine. Chose a good brand. 10-40 or 15-40 Diesel XPart is what I have used with great success.

Diesel oil contains a range of slow acting detergents ( Diesels run much dirtier than Petrols ) and those detergents will work in your Petrol engine to cleanse away the 'varnish' which accumulates on the Cam Followers ( Tappets = Hydraulic Valve Lifters ) which affect their operation and the sludge lurking elsewhere in the engine.

I've done this to most used cars I've purchased over the past ten years or so and in every instance it has been beneficial. I used to drain the Diesel oil after 2-300 miles but now leave it in for 1-2000 miles. Noisey tappents can settle to a nice quiet 'rustle' and there are other benefits, even fuel consumption and throttle response can improve. Best of all, when the correct 10-40 semisynthetic goes in the engine after the Diesel stuff is drained ( note the colour of that old oil ), the new oil still shows clean and clear on the dipstick up to 1000 miles after oil change. Without the treatment, new oil is soon discoloured on the dipstick within 100 miles from the contaminants still lurking in the higher mileage engines.

I do this with every used car I buy even if I'm assured that the car has recently been serviced with good oil.... the previous owner may have paid for that and the history confirms but, that's sadly no guarantee that it was done....

Well known Engine flushes work of course but, the diesel oil treatment works very well ... for me on my cars.

Nice tip mate - I would have never thought of that! When that engine is cold in winter that clicking tappet sound is Agggrhhhhh *****ing annoying.

Cheers folks, I'll give it a good looking at before firing it up. It's been down to around -15 here with loads of snow so if there are any issues with the cooling system this will probably find them.

In summer I'v occasionally noticed a slight smell of coolant when reversing with the top down, do you think this could be the catch from the waterpump? The coolant level has been fine so far and I changed the cap as a precaution soon after getting the car.
