New look for MG ZS

How much longer can they tinker with it?

MG have been giving facelifts to some of the range and the latest car to get a nip and tuck is the ZS (the MG equivalent of the Rover 45).

A new 'face' has been grafted onto the car which includes a new splitter housing twin lens headlamps. The but the changes are more significant than just a new lump o' plastic at the front and a new rear bumper - a new fascia and console inside the car complemented by new seats, switchgear and instruments bring the whole design on another year.

A new ZS 180 body kit includes fender vents, wheelarch and sill extensions to accommodate the increased wider track and new 17" multi-spoke alloy wheels.

There's no disguising the fact that MG need to string this model out as long as possible but they continue to do a great job of keeping the design fresh and desirable.

I like it, a lot

The ZS handles very well, bags of torque from the ZS180 and cheap to pick up too The interior will be made much more ZT like which can only be a good thing. There's also a supercharging kit available soon.

It looks 8 years old . . .
This is the business:
As long as MG will sell, OK. But they should at least make the impression that something new in design is coming our way.

MMmm, yet again detrimental comments about the MG range of cars..... getting a little dull me thinks...

Mainly because of one reason - has anyone actually driven one? Try it, its fantastic. Ok, its an old design and the interior and seating position sucks.... but for £15K (yes thats £15K BEFORE discounts) you get a stonking chassis and a loverly 180BHP V6.... keep your stupid 9000 rev Hondas - give me a V6 any day.

It really is that good to drive.... and fantastic value for money.

Hmmm .... the MG X80.

The car they should have made instead of the SV.

Must admit I still prefer the SV to the X80, much more aggressive.

As for the new ZS, it now how has the looks to match its great driving experience.

Have any of you guys and gals seen the back of it on todays autoexpress? YUKKK!

Edited to say - looks great from the front though!

Now I wonder if with the wider track they've got over the problems the older model had with traction out of corners?

Agree with Nick on the back. I think overall the rework is a great job, but the new bootlid and resposition of the number plate to the bumper have left an ENORMOUS expanse of featureless metal, barely broken by the MG and ZS badges.

A great shame, as the bootlid unfortunately drags the whole otherwise excellent restyle down. Hoping the 5-door is a bit better.

When are they performing the same magic to the ZR?

Then again, that's kind of what happened with the MkIII to MkIV Golf and everybody just got used to it...

Hmmm....where have I seen a rear like that before...

Vanessa Feltz!

And what's happened to the huuuuge spoiler the 180 used to have?? It might make this back end look acceptable!

''keep your stupid 9000 rev Hondas''

But this *is* a Honda. It's just a pensioned-off one (can't remember - or care, really - if it's 1 or 2 generations ago). And 9000 revs are something this wheezy old banger could only dream of. Honda moved on so long ago that they must be laughing their socks off at this latest pathetic rehash.

It might be nice to drive (so are plenty of other things that don't look quite as embarrassing as this!), but let's face it guys - it's WAY out of date. And that AWFUL swollen plastic apology for an MG grille - it looks like a Skoda that someone has punched on the nose.

This is another tired old version of the car that used to have PAISLEY seat upholstery, for chrissake - just like old men's pyjamas (what on earth were they thinking of when they did *that*?!?!).

Never mind - when I was a kid I used to have the same dialogue with people about Austin Maxis and Morris Itals. I used to say they were cr*p and all my mates used to say they were the dog's b*ll*cks (sad mates, eh?). But *now* who looks silly? Can you believe that there were actually people who bought Itals instead of Golfs? And can you believe that there are actually people who buy these instead of Golfs...?

In ten years' time the apologists for this latest 'MG' (ha ha ha ha) will look back and realise how silly they looked. I give the company 2 years - even the directors can see the end coming.

Did I say two years? Sorry - 6 months...

Cheers

Alan

It amazes me that certain people feel the need to slag off MG/Rover so much. If you don't like the styling of their cars then fine, others do (shock horror)

Actually, it appears that not many people like their styling after all (although it wasn't bad 8 years ago, when it was fresh) - I just heard on the radio that their sales are down 40% this year. Need I say more?

Sales are down due to the worst kept secret that facelifts were due out mid 2004.

Longbridge recently ground to a halt not through lack of orders but they ran out of components. Also, for the first time since the mid-90s they are running a Sunday shift and offering overtime and time in-lieu.

Expect July figures to show a big improvement.

As for MGR being finished, you clearly haven't heard of the SAIC deal then?
