99T VVC Cat C, Vic checked and repaired. Ive checked the repair on a ramp and all looks good with photo evidence and damaged parts kept. 100k no history, cambelt done, oil clean, no mayo. needs four tyres rear window and gas one side. Long Mot/Tax all for £400.

I have a budget of £1200. Should I hang on and find a non cat vvc for £1200 and hope that it needs no work, or buy the above nail and spend the rest getting the car right? I'm leaning towards the nail, as the £1200 VVC's I've viewed are far from perfect, and all need tyres anyway. Opinions please!

It may be worth taking the car to these guys;

For an opinion. They are very good and know MG's, especially 'F's' inside out. I use them to check suspension and geometry - and service, despite being 70 miles away.

Well.. for starters there is no such thing as a cheap MGF. So whether its the £400 nail or £1,200 option, you will be spending on top of that. If the CAT C checks out right, for £400 its probably worth the punt IMO. You will know within 1-2 months if it going to start costing. If so, Ebay it for spares and you'll get the notes £££ back now worries smile and move on.

If you click my Nic you will see mine, MY2000 which I got off here for £1,900. I was looking at spending £3.5K but thought you spend money on the F in any case, so I took the cheaper car and then brought her up to spec with stuff I wanted: Brakes, Suspension, New Alloys, Toyos, Full Beans Service, Other Upgrades. Another guy I know bought one around £2.7K and still had to layout £600!!... Good Luck.

Ive got a 1998 r plate mgf 1.8vvc for sale. Its in pretty good condition, i looked at dozens of cars before i bought mine & they were nails, perfect hood, hardly used new tyres (all four), but its been stored for 12mths in the garage while ive been concentrating on building up my business. Its got no road tax or mot. Last passed an mot about 15mths ago although i was advised that the brake pipes were starting to corrode. Dont know what it'd cost to replace the brake pipes but you can have it for £700. Cracking car to drive, dont know why mgf's have this thing about them being naff. Even got a service history.
