Just wondered if anyone else had suffered from same problem and how you resolved it. Got a 69 Sprite and have an issue with it cutting out when hot.

After about 20 minutes of sitting around with bonnet up it's usually cool enough to get home, but it's spoiling the fun of using her at the moment as can't do any long runs or risk getting caught in congested routes.

Think it's because the fuel pump is seated on the same side as exhaust manifold and the heat is causing fuel to evaporate then when it gets hot cuts out - already replaced last pump as it was faulty and rather than cutting out almost caught fire! thankfully pulled over in time.

Anyway, my OH who is the mechanically minded of the two of us has two possible solutions:

1. set up some form of heat deflection system
2. move the fuel pump to the other side of engine

I think the 2nd option is our favoured but any other ideas/thoughts would be much appreciated..

Not sure what installation you actually have, as fuel pumps mounted on the engine were mechanical pumps (generally early midgets and 1500s), rather than the electric SU Pump which were mounted by the rear axle (generally 1275s). The symptoms you describe are more akin to fuel vaporisation in the fuel floats or lines near the carburettors than pump failure.

As above, sounds like you may have a marina engine fitted as generally 1275 spridget engines have the mechanical pump port blocked off making it impossible to fit one.

If of course it's an electrical pump and under the bonnet that won't be helping if it's an SU standard pump as they are designed to push as opposed to pull.

If of course it's still in the standard place in the rear axle well then even if the exhaust is near it it won't be causing an issue.

Your issues are either fuel vaporisation as above (is a carb heat shield fitted?) or is the pump packing up? SU pumps do pack up.

Hi, if the fuel pump is located at the rear of the car. Do you have the correct fuel filler cap fitted. I think you should have a vented cap, if not then with the engine running it will create a vaccuum in the tank and starve the engine of fuel, 20 mins or so of non running would cure that.
