What is the plastic box?

Hi everyone

I am looking at buying a really lovely little MGF. It is a 1997 car, originally registered in Japan and then brought over to the UK and registered here in 2001.

It is a tidy little car, one thing is confusing me as I have never seen it before on an MGF, the car had got a black plastic box hanging down from the dash on the passenger side.

This is the first car that I have driven that has got aircon, is this box something to do with the aircon or is it something else please?

I really appreciate your help. This could be the car that makes my little MGF dream a reality.

Is there a chance its a warning flare bracket? sounds stupid, but these are quite often found in MGF's imported from Japan.

Some of the AC system components are mounted in the passenger footwell too though.
