not sure which diagnostic is suitable as so confusing reading the sales ads!! we will need to be able to use on mgf from 96 to 2002 and the same years on the xk8 as these are the cars we tend to drive (would be handy for the tvr aswell) so we know whats the problem before taking it to repair shops...any pointers please thanks again

All those cars are OBDII compliant so any OBDII scanner in theory should be fine however I have a stand alone Geniscan one which is perfect for some of my cars but will not read the MG's so I also have an Elm 327 USB scanner which connects to my laptop and I have various diagnosic software on there and although a little time needs to be taken to set it up properly and find the software you prefer that is the one I would recomend. They are avaliable off eBay for around £20 and most come with the basic software that you want for reading and resetting codes.

OBDII complaince was introduced by MG in 2001. Thus an OBDII reader/scanner wont work with eariler cars.
ZR's, ZS's, ZT's and TF's are all OBDII, and only the later MGF's are.

As a general rule, OBDII complaint MG's can be indentified by having an O2 seonsor mounted after the cat (in addition to the one before the cat) and by having the coils mounted on top of the spark plugs. If it has a dizzy, then its not OBDII complaint.
For non OBDII complaint MG's you need to seek the services of a dealer with a Testbook computer. Some LR dealers still have them, if you dont have an MGR dealer/specialist near by.

Indeed your right 2001 on for daft European vehicles and MG's with MEMS3. I suppose thats one thing the yanks got right as they started with OBD a lot earlier, mind you thats because of all the faults the bloody things throw up.

My apologies for saying it would read without thinking properly.
