I allowed the poor thing to over heat. Subsequently, it started to falter when completely warmed up (about 10 miles) very similar symptoms to previously described on here. So I am concerned that the head gasket has gone. Pain in the arse because the engine has only done 12K miles. I have taken the opportunity to whip the head off and check it over and will replace the gasket and all the studs, washers and nuts.

There is no oil contamination in the water or water in the oil, so thats good, but I still think its best to check the head.I wonder whether anyone knows where I can get the head checked to see if it needs skimming within easy reach of Bishops Stortford?

Given the simplicity in changing the Bs head and the fact it is relatively robust and not prone to warping I would risk it rebuilding without especially as a head gasket is only a tenner.

As a rough guide it should take you about 2 hours to change the gasket once your used to the job!

Thanks. I've done one or two head gaskets before smile I've just never had a head skimmed.
It was very easy to get off, since it had done relatively few miles since rebuild.
I was rather hoping not to "get used to" doing it though!
Still, as you say, there is a good chance its not damaged.

Cheers

Quick update.

Took the head to a nice man down the road and it was indeed out of true. Now skimmed and ready to pick up. £30 plus VAT. Jobs a goodun.
