Guys

Excuse my lack of mechanical/bodywork skills !

Looking for advice from MG [ and Triumph ] classic car owners living near the coast..

I am about to move nearer to the coast [ house about 300 metres as the crow flies from the sea ], and am worried that the local 'sea air' could encourage rust in older cars ..

I will have a decent wind and watertight garage to store any potential future purchase of a classic - 1960/1970s Mg/Triumph probably - I'm looking now for a proper restored car ..

Are my concerns valid ? Used to have a couple of TVRs and with fibreglass bodies they would have been alright in this situation..[ chassis were also decent ]

Also posting this in the Triumph forum..

Thanks
Brian

I had my old MG B parked up 20 yards from the sea for 7 years and it didn't rust any quicker than when it was inland. Salt on the roads is a far greater threat to bodywork than salt in the air, and seagulls stting on the car is even worse.

If you're keeping your car in the garage and washing salt off if you use it in winter then you shouldn't notice any more corrosion than if it was inland.

Thanks that makes me feel a lot better ...

I felt a bit daft asking the question as there must be hundreds of classic car owners near the seaside but felt I had to ask ...

Nice speaking to you again..

Brian

I would make sure you get all the underneath Waxoiled Up too.

You may also want to invest in this too
http://permabag.com/index.php?locus=http://permaba...

Costs approx £300-£400

PJ

Click on PERMA-BAG is the item you want to read... might be some on Ebay going cheaper!!

i can only comment on my experience. My Dad lives on the coast, the beach is behind his garden wall. Everything metal rust really quick down there. I mean 3 year old Astra's are rusting in the corners of there panels. Although Transits rust anyway, they rust before your eyes down there.

PJ / Mini

Thanks for the replies

PJ - like the idea of the Perma Bag product

Defnitely worth spending a few hundred quid if the protection on offer works to protect the car ..

Will have a look on flea bay

Thanks again

If you are looking for a storage chamber I can recomend Air Chamber, they are spot on and as they do not touch the car there is also no risk or scratching. Carcoon also do a slimilar one.

I had a friend with a Fiat Uno who raced yatchs and left it parked in boatyards for months at a time. It was the rustiest 3 year old car I have ever seen.

The fact that it's a Fiat is the main reason here I think!

Thanks - apprecite if you would keep in touch with the condition of your car...

Checked your profile and your beach loaction is very similar to the location I am moving to - small fishing village on the coast , hills nearby , with a caravan site for the visitors ! [ moving to a village called Hopeman on the Moray firth coast..]

Thanks again

absolutely - a 90's Fiat is rust waiting to happen but I expect few failed their first MOT due to corrosion, I expect few 3 year old Fiats were even that rusty. The OP is talking about 70's MGs. Hardly a bastion of rust resistance.
