ZR exhaust heat shield. Can I remove it?!

The heat shield between my back box and the boot floor has corroded and is rattling, and frankly driving me up the bd wall.

Will there be any ill effects if I were just to remove the aluminium heat shield? I assume more heat will transfer to the boot, but as long as I don't put the milk there is it a problem?
