Dear all

My g/f has a 52plate TF which is going in for a suspected head gasket replacement ( using water/pinking etc - although no water oil contamination ) under a Black Horse warranty - as recommended in previous threads it will also be having a cambelt and tensioner changed.

My question is .....the repairing garage is quoting an extra hours labour ( around £60 ) to replace belt/ten on top of the warranty repair ( h/gasket )

a) By carring out the h/gasket repair would the garage have to remove c/belt + tensioner and so no extra time required ?

b ) Would the garage be able to 'lose' the extra labour in the warranty repair ?

I will be supplying the belt + ten parts .....

Many thanks

They could easliy lose the labour time the Cambelt & Tensioner... and if you are supplying the parts, then they should be obiliging in this area, as at most would add no more than 1 hour. I'd even look to having the Alternator belt checked too and if its worn, new belt is like £10.

Offer him a 6 pack of beers to do these bits as a final play wink

PS. IF you speak to any other garage for HG work, as standard would include a Belt + Ten change as an incluisve requirement anyway, so don't see why they are being funny over it... sounds like they are trying to get some money out of you and will probably book an extra hour on to the warranty company in any case.

Don't think I'd be using them after this event !!

Thanks for the advice PJ.......very helpful

Think I will be taking a six pack over when we drop the car off tonight ...

I will also be supplying a water pump as recommended on another thread

I just spoke to the warranty company and they advise that the cam belt/ten wont be covered but also stated that it shouldnt really cost me anymore if I supplied the parts.

Sorry, one more question .....should I be expecting more labour time to fit the water pump ? ( or will a 12 pack of beers cover it ? )

Many thanks again

LOL.. typically the HG work is as follows (this what I had done on my car)...

- MultiLayer HG Set
- New Stronger Top Bolts Set
- Cambelt + Tensioner Kit
- Waterpump & Thermostat
- 3-Way Heater + Filler Hoses*
- Underfloor pipes*
- Coolant Flush, New Coolant + Pressure Test

Not saying you need all this work, so don't panic! but I would get a new Water Pump in there, they are not too expensive parts wise, try http://www.sussexclassiccar.co.uk/ I get quite a bit from here, very good!!

Before the garage begins work, ask them to carry out a visual inspection where I've marked the above with an asterix... the system is going to be drained out and redone - make sure they do use proper coolant: Deep Red / Blue or Green in colour (I use Toyota's Forlife Coolant - Red).

The 3-Way hose can sheer its securing clip, causing chafeing, then pop goes your pipe and you lose all the water and F***k me back in the garage again!! New hose from Sussex is about £40.

The underfloor hoses are prone to corrosion as the cheap skates at Rover used Steel - which corrodes, which blocks which then BANG! goes your HG all over again. Set of Aluminium ones cost around £70-£80... I would order these from Sussex and get them installed - worth paying the extra here, but whilst they have the car stripped and coolant flushed out, you may aswell get it done an over with.

Check back over the service documents to see if any of these bits have been done and when... If there is no evidence of this work, then if you talk to the guys there.. I would try to arrange this with them.

Warranty: HG + Cambelt / Ten - all done on the warranty (your supplying parts on Cam), maybe some beers to slip in a Water Pump on warranty labour if you get parts may do it biggrin You can argue the belt/ten here and he is worth is stuff then he will agree that its a given (warranty firms are all cheap skates and will always try to get away with the minimum - spend £5 to save 50p approach)

Paid for Work: Underfloor Pipes + Thermostat. Get the parts from Sussex (normally all NBD delivery)... the labour will be cheaper as the system will be drained anyhows.. so you will save on coolant, labour and pressure test costs as he needs to do this with the HG works.

Just make sure you will get fresh oil and filter too - this should be a given under the warranty work.
