Hi,

I bought a MGF 1.8i, (W)2000 last week and discovered it was overheating quite badly when at rest. To cut a long painfull story short I discovered that the electric fan for the rad was spinning the wrong way, so I just swapped the two wires around and hey presto it blows instead of sucking and has cured the problem, that and a £3 expansion cap.

I have heard that the MGFs suffer from head failure, I wonder if the above problem has caused this as I am sure mine has been like it from new, contacted the previous owner and he said thats why he sold it!

Is this a common problem with the fan?

I have heard of the fan fuse blowing quite alot, but not reversed.
The Head gasket does fail quite alot, the general consensus is about 30k miles, if you are worried, check your coolant level regularly and check for mayo in the oil as well.
Our vvc has had HGF twice in a year and needed a re-build last time ££££.

never again a k series for us.

It was a common problem at the first models, becasue that where just two black wires, so no real chance to tell them apart. Since the MK2 the marked the wires to prevent this - of course mistakes do happen.

If oyu have any techinical questions about the MGF check out: www.mgfcar.de/ (Most is in English as well.)

And don't forget to check the level of the coolant water on a regular basis - if you do so, you should end up fine > except for the common little problems ... but you should be quite willing to fogive your little car all of them after a look of the price tag -> For what it is, it really is one hell of a good preforming little sportscar ... just a bit to less power, but well.
