Week 4 in the garage and the water pipes have been changed. They gave us the car back and told us they would "sort the bill out and phone us" Im not happy with that because I dont know what they are going to charge! Then, they have split the back window!!!! GRRR! THEN.... I have checked the water coolant and the oil, water is filthy and the oil is still milky!

Want to take it for a second opinion somewhere as I've not parted with any money yet and certainly wont be until I know the work has been done.

Have an independent inspection on the car. If the work hasn't been done, or done properly, with an inspectors report I think they'll find it difficult to demand any payment.
Normally you have to give the garage a second chance to put things right, not sure why, as if they don't know how to do it the first time......! As you havn't given them any money I wouldn't let them anywhere near the car again.
Good luck

Hiya, have called the garage this morning, still they havent put a bill together, after being quoted £600 originally for the HGF they have said £250 so far for the labour, apparently the boss is looking into the split back window, I told them I was insulted at the way the car was given back to me. damaged and absolutely filthy and perhaps the work not done.

They have now said it would be normal practice for them to let me run the car perhaps 500 miles and then they will do a filter and oil change?

Advice please? Im contacting trading standards today.

When my Hg was changed in december there was still a little milky residue on the dipstick (OOO-EER) which has cleared up now. The oil and the water should be brand new, and they should have flushed the coolant and oil several times to get the worst of the cack out. Sounds like they are a right bunch of cowboys.

I have repaired my rear window with normal selotape but if they have damaged it they need to fix it.

eta - Also might be best to speak to the organ grinder rather than the monkey, ask for the owner / manager and deal direct with him.

Hi,

They really should;

1) Have flushed both oil and coolant systems fully properly (although difficult to do after an HGF and you might have a little residue).
2) Have spent somewhere between 1-3 days on the job depending on what needed doing - mine took 3 days because the head needed skimming.
3) Told you what needed doing once they had investigated the problem fully (i.e. have they told you where the head gasket failed and what else it affected?)
4) Told you what parts they were going to replace - as well as replacing the HG itself, have they checked/changed the water pump, belt tensioner, timing belt, head bolts and the oil rail that the bolts go into - they should have, as that is either part of the HGF job or it is irrefutably sensible to do while in there.
5) Not have split your rear window - that has probably happened due to raising and lowering the hood to get access to the engine hatch; in the current cold weather, any such flexible window is prone to split if that is done without warming it up first.
6) Be able to show you the old parts that they have removed.
7) Checking an engine after about 500 miles is pretty standard to check for leaks etc, and if appropriate re-torque head bolts (not sure if that is necessary on an F), but an oil and filter change shouldn't be necessary ASFAIK

It really does sound like a bunch of cowboys have had a go, or it is possibly a garage that simply bit off more than they could chew, because they don't know the particular type of car. But a good garage would tell you that they have a problem with it - that should not be your problem - you should expect them to know how to do the job if they tell you they can do it....they should also have given you a reasonable time estimate and breakdown of costs before starting. Not paying at this stage, getting the work checked and involving Trading standards sounds like a good option could be a good option
