The diesel is a BMW unit. The v6 petrols are KV6 and rather nice. Both are mostly bomb proof.
Depends whether you want performance or economy!
And of course you've always got the V8.............

If fuel economy isn't a problem (ie, you can cope with 18-20mpg as an average), then buy a V8 for a few reasons.

They're the most powerful, of course, but also RWD, unlike all the others, which are FWD, which makes them the most fun.

They're very simple and unstressed, so not a lot goes wrong apart from a few relatively straightforward niggles which are either common to the rest of the range, or easily solved. The entire drive train was built with a supercharged version in mind, so it can all take 450bhp, but the standard car only produced 255bhp.

There are over 150 members of the owners' club - www.two-sixties.com. When you consider they made fewer than 900, that's a pretty amazing statistic.

Did I mention that they're fun? biggrin

For some strange reason (which I can only assume to be the rarity value), they actually seem to hold their value better than anything else in the range! I paid £12,700 for mine from a main dealer 4 years and 40k miles ago with 12 month warranty and AA membership. If I decided to sell it tomorrow, I'd expect to get around £9,500 for it, which is pretty bloody impressive if you compare it to anything with similar fuel consumption, even from manufacturers who are still in business. hehe

It's worth looking at the mgrover and xpower forums. This will give you some idea about what to look for. Prices are all over the place, it really depends on what you think the car is worth. I bought mine (a diesel) last July and have never regretted it. They drive well, handle well and are pretty well equiped. Apart from servicing, tyres etc, it's been pretty reliable (it had 80k plus on the clock so I've been prepared for problems), spares are available and as said info is readily available on the web. Just a pity that MGR got its act together carwise too late to save this excellent car. And yes, I'd love a v8 but can't afford the fuel bills, hence the diesel.

They did. In total something like 120, split between Mark 1 and Mark 2 versions. Mark 1 is much rarer, I seem to remember that 27 were built although Kermit will clarify. They also made Rover 75 V8 tourers (auto only) but I think only 10 in total were ever produced. By the way, they are great cars.
