Having had a big service back in August, replacing all the belts, tensioners and so forth... during this recent heavy rain, my fan belt squeals like I have sucked up Pinky & Perky into the engine bay.

Is this is something common on MGF/TF's??
Should I be overly concerned by it?? as during the summer weeks I did not hear a peep. Thanks!

Hi, it is more common in the wetter months, are you missing the cover in the off-side rear wheel arch?

What causes the squeal is the belt slipping. This can be caused by lack of friction because the belt is too loose or, as possible in this case, a combination of that and water getting onto the belt and lubricating it.

The belt caould also slip because of a failing bearing on one of the pulleys or because one has seized. I'd suggest the tension needs checking. But don't just tighten it regardless. If it is adjusted correctly and still slips then find out why, don't just tighten it.

That you describe is often the sign of a worn belt.

Can you be certain all the new belts you paid for were actually replaced? .... 'appens.

Your alternator is also probably putting a heavier load through it, with lights, wipers, heater blower, etc on at the same time.

At initial start-up it will be cold and inflexible (like the ex...lol!) so more inclined to slip ?

Just needs tightening a little I'd say. smile

Thanks for the tips guys.. When it was just bitter cold yesterday it was fine, heavy rain today and squeals like a pig... will get it booked in for a look over and adjustment.
