As per the subject really smile

I'm after changing my rear axle, hubs and wheels from the current wire wheels and spinners to bolt on wheels. I have 5 wire wheels with reasonable tyres, all parts are in fact fitted and currently in use without any issues. The onyl thing I do know is that the hibs are a bit worn but are replacable on their own. The wheels hubs are fine as far as I know as they are much newer and not covered the same miles.

A cheap parts car with bolt on wheels would be a good place to start if anyone has one smile

As you say, to convert that way round you will need to change the axle as the housings are different widths (IIRC). I presume that you are after switching because of the condition of the wires, the higher maintenance of them, and the flex of them compared to bolt on wheels?

One thought before you go to all that trouble of changing the axle over, is have you considered just fitting centre lock minilites? http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.asp...

Another, if you are intent on going down the route of wanting bolt ons - you will need to check, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that wheels off a Datsun (280?) are the right size and stud PCD and, most importantly, have the right offset to allow you to use the wire wheel axle fitted with bolt on hubs, thus avoiding having to change the whole axle.

Thanks for the tip on the wheels Mark.

Yes, the hubs on the car are worn, wheels are fine.

But as you say, bolt on wheels are less hassle than wire wheels and I quite like the minilites.

If I can't source any bolt on parts I may go for a new set of 4 splined hubs.

New nubs, then some of those lovely splined minilites, with a triple eared spinner of course!

Uhhm, I'm not too keen on minilites with spinners frown

Hi,

Did you use conversion hubs or change your rear axle to a wire wheel type?

If I use the bolt on hubs on my axle the wheels will hit the arches - the axle on the wire wheel set up uses longer half shafts. The shoulders on the conversion hubs for wire wheels (from bolt on type) are shorter than the original wire wheel hubs to reduce the offset from the hub so that there is no wheel arch intrusion when wire wheels are fitted to a bolt on wheel type rear axle.

Thanks,
K

Hi yes i used the conversion hubs on the rear but i think the front hubs are standard and will fit they are sitting in my garage so if you want them they are free.

Thanks Alan

I haven't heard back from Alan yet but if that all goes OK then I may have a good set of wires surplus to requirements.

Hi Alan;

Moss sent me an email for 15% off this weekend and I wasn't sure whether I'd hear back from you so I bit the bullet and ordered a new set of splined hubs and wheels and brake parts.

Thanks for getting back to me though, I hadn't realised you were away or I'd have hung on for a bit longer but not knowing and the chance of 15% off seemed silly not to take the discount.

Thanks also to Oliver for his kind offer, again I hadn't seen it I'm afraid until I had placed my order.

Thanks guys!

K
