Noisy MGF steering wheel ??

My MGF has a kind of grating/grinding sound when you spin the steering wheel - its sounds like plastic rubbing and it quite high up the column - just below the steering wheel itself. The power steering works without any problems and it drives fine - just annoying when parking or manoevering - any ideas ??
