At the risk of getting abuse for this.. I am wondering how many blokes have got MG TF's? Is it a girls car?! The 160 seems like such a good value way to go quickly with the roof down and reliably that I can't help keeping considering getting one!

Cheers

The perception seems to be it is a girls/hairdressers car but i love my f trophy and would recommend to anyone! Just be prepared for the inevitable comments from your mates/colleagues! Jealousy is a terrible thing.

I currently have an F (my third one) and love it to bits. Yes, sure it hasn`t got the grunt or presence of a tvr etc, but for a bit of fun/hooning around and the sort of money they are currently going for, they really make a lot of sense.

Of the F's and TF's i see round my way regularly the majority are driven by men. Is it such a bad thing to be driving a percieved 'girls' car, certainly a conversation starter wink with the female mg drivers!

I very underrated car IMO, this car often tags along with our TVR runs and is never normally to far off the pace. Mid-engined, entertaining handling, and can be easily tweaked to get around, 175/180 Bhp, which will give it a decent power to rate ratio, similar to a Focus ST, which incidentally seem to be driven a lot by women around my way wink Get a uprated head gasket fitted as well and it will be just as reliable as most non Jap sports cars.
MGTF 160 or a run of the mill euro box with a bigger engine?? I know which one i would have. driving

personally id rather the positively reviewed by all big engined eurobox as you call it to the poorly regarded typical ladies car.

and its not about who drives the cars (im sure many more women drive big bmw`s and mercs than the rover.. sorry i mean mg) it is about the image they portray as cars themselves, it just looks girly like say a micra cc, 206cc or mx-5 etc...

reasonable cars they may be but i didnt make up the rules or peoples opinions it is just the general consensus of the way these cars are viewed. but it would be funny to see one of those rovers on a rally.

I've got a TF135. It's more reliable than my old MR2 (so far); it brakes and handles so much better.

Brilliantly suited to UK roads as you don't have to be traveling superfast to enjoy it. Being compact really helps on narrow back roads, especially not being too wide.

The TF feels totally different to the old MGF. You can tell MGR must have spent quite a bit of time looking at the Elise when they made the updates.

Does anybody know if there is any way of mounting the seat 2" lower though? New runners would probably do the trick.

From any image point of view I've not had any issues but my list of cars suggests I really don't care about car image anyhow smile

"Totally different"

There are a number of reasons it feels different to the previous MGF ... completely different underpinnings.

For several decades now, ALL cars can be driven by females, even those of frail strength and small stature ~ they are all so easy to drive now. Thus, ALL cars are girlie.

I speak as someone old enough to remember that many cars could only really be driven by men. Few females were strong enough for the cars of yesteryears ~ as a small boy, if you saw a female behind the wheel of a car, you remarked on it ~ it was a rare sight. Now, female drivers outnumber males.

I'm delighted to say that locally, several MGFs, MGTFs and ZRs are driven by females ~ all attractive going places career type .... women ... not girls!

Gosh, I wish I could turn my personal mileage back about thirty years.... biggrin

My wife drives our MG ZS ~ loves the car. I like driving it too.

... girls car indeed. Plonkers.

This is very interesting...I would say the Toyota MK3 MR2 is very much a girls / hairdressers car compared to MGF - MGF Trophy - TF models. I think the MG is a nice little sports runner for either sex and personally don't perceieve it as a girly car...just something thats a load of fun for the money.

Now..time to set the car (or is it cat?) amongst the pigeons!! Everytime I see any MK of Mazda MX5, the driver is always an Old Bald Geezer, PMFL. I had my MGF in the garage Saturday for some lovely new Toyo's and there was a beautiful black MK2 MX5 in there for MOT, totally mint. I said to my mechanic, I bet you £50 that the person who comes to collect that car will be 1) Old Geezer and 2) Bald...sure enough an hour later...this old Geezer turns up for his MX5 and takes off his base ball cap to reveal his Bobby Charlton hair style.

Moral of this story??

Well I am more than happy if someone says you are driving a girls car...as I like nice fit girls cos they are great to take to bed, like I enjoy taking my F out for a blast on those A/B roads.

Certainly much better association than the MX5 alternative, where its you are driving an old geezers car and the next time you go get a haircut, see if they are doing a deal for a Bobby Charlton.

Check out my baby....this is just a classic looking fun car...no old geezers and bald heads in this photo, lol. (No, sexy blonde draped over the bonnet either...Damn!!!)

I have been pretty fortunate in having owned some lovely cars, recently I restored an MGB GT and have just sold it

I fancied something cheap and cheerful around 2K for what is remaining of our British summer nad bought a MGF Trophy with hardtop on a whim belonging to a girl nr Manchester. I had the cambelts done a miltek exhaust put on and refurbed the wheels in gloss black so another £1,000 spent. I took some stick off my son and his pals about the car and the colour but believe you me I love it! It is fast enough sound awesome with the Miltek drives great doing around 30 to the gallon driven hard and the roof is a doddle to raise and lower.

After drving and worrying about expensive cars bein left parked or adding mileage (doing 10 to the gallon) that will devalue them using this MGF is a revelation. I just jump in roof down leave it parked the same and "enjoy" it! It takes 2 sets of golf clubs drives lovely very wind resistant with the roof down and I personally love the looks and the colour. So at 3k it is one of the best most enjoyable cars I have owned.

That looks good and a lot of enjoyable fun for little outlay as you have found.

Not a fan of black alloys on any car ~ I know many youngsters think "them well cool init", but, to my eyes, your Yellow F would look so much better with silver alloy wheels. Ideally the 5-spoke alloys fitted to the VVCs back in the 1990s set the car off nicely. A set of these can be picked up for peanuts nowadays.

Edit to add @ 11:00

Just noticed your car is a Trophy 160 ~ the four pot AP calipers ~ VVC 5-Spokes may not fit over those.

Not sure whether your reply is about sports cars or your fear of going bald (pretty likely).

Yes I'm balding like probably 50% of PHers, and yes I'm used to immature young blokes being jealous of my hard-earned stuff.

That's life.

Sadly the MGFs will never have enough appeal for this baldy old bloke; other cars in the range, maybe. smile

Graham..well still got a full head of hair thanks, but there is always that fear, lol. My point relates to the "is it a girls car statement" where I merely referenced that maybe, but MX5's have the association of the older gent who is typically a bit thin on top....having enjoyed a nice long weekend in Dorset I passed around 12 MX5's this BHW and with the exception of two girls at the wheel, all the rest were older gents, showing a nice bobby charlton example...make of it what you will, I am merely pointing out what I've seen on my jaunts...no offence to those suffering baldness, purely my observation of the MX5 drivers.

Yes, remember the series well, but could never understand what the hell it was all about. hehe

My car was a later S3 with wider (Aleycat) wheels and a fully balanced and blueprinted 1760 crossflow with twin 45s, producing around 150bhp.

Enough to leave my friend's 911 turbo behind. smile

A Seven of any kind was a very rare car at that time .
