A friend of mine has a MGF 1.8i 2000 W, 39,000 miles. There is a whine from the gearbox. The faster he goes the louder the sound. He thinks it might be a diff/ gearbox bearing.

Has anyone experienced such a problem and if so how much will it cost to fix.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

If it's speed related look at the wheel bearings 1st

The noise is coming from the gearbox. But will check the wheel bearing.

The gearbox is generally bullet proof, other than the cable change mechanism, but this is not an unknown problem, even in relatively low mileage cars. Before ripping apart the car and replacing the gearbox though, try changing the gearbox oil for the correct stuff to ensure that it is a) running with the right stuff in it and b) is filled to the correct level - it was not exactly rare to find that they had only been filled to the low level when they left the factory and as it is a 100,000 mile service interval, probalby hasn't beenchecked....

The thread just below this (link below) one has links to details of the correct type of oil and the filler location etc, and simply changing the oil and filling to the cporrect level has fixed the problem for many.

No problem - if that doesn't fix it try an additive, as that is the last resort, beyond that being living with the noise and waiting for it to get louder (often it doesn't) and ultimately replacing the gearbox - there are plenty of gearboxes around if it comes to that, hope it doesn't
