Always being a bit wary of the bonnet flying up on the MG, especially when doing some speed on the motorway,I've spent ages trying to think of a way to put another type of catch on it. On the way to the last meet of the year going down the A2, I noticed the bonnet seemed to be sitting slightly high at the front. On further investigation it turned out the bonnet latch within the spring was undoing itself, not sure how much thread was left before it came out completely.
So this is what I've done. Stainless steel bonnet pins bolted to stainless strip bent as pics show, top bracket riveted to underside of bonnet and lower bracket to slam panel.Stainless R pins on wires to lock them in place through the bumper.

That's a beautifully engineered solution, I'm genuinely impressed, however it really shouldn't have been necessary, if the latch pin was undoing itself the lock nut was either missing or loose, there are a lot of MGs going around without bonnets coming adrift so I would have sorted the original problem, but 10 out of 10 for your design nontheless.

Thanks Oliver. I wound the original latch back in to its original position and then tightened the lock nut back up. The bonnet from my old car went onto a car that this happened to and folded in half on the top of the windscreen, couldn't have been a very pleasent moment! So I thought belt and braces!

Once again Oliver's in first and I agree with his post totally and I also see that doing this has given you the extra piece of mind you want but I don't think too many other owners need worry about the bonnet flying up

Personally I'd be more afraid of catching those pins, I bang my head against the bonnet and existing catches enough as it is

Nice discrete job tho' thumbup

Bonnet pins really are one of my most hated items, as Justin has discovered they really don't look nice.

However this idea is growing on me more and more, I still don't see the need for them, but it really is such a well engineered solution it impresses me.
