F cables are difficult to get hold of these days, with new cables being virtually unobtainable. Used cables come up on ebay regularly, or you could try these MGF specialists:-

A common solution to the spares availability problem is to fit the cables from the MG TF, which are a slightly different length and so require the bell crank to be changed too. The above should be able to advise/supply the parts too, should you decided on that option.

Does that improve the quality of the gearchange at all or is there more to it than that? TF's I've driven felt a bit less vague than my 'F (which is actually perfectly OK as long as I don't think about what I'm doing - just change gear without paying attention to what my hand's doing and it's fine, actually think about it and I miss gears...).--

The TF does seem to have a tighter gearchange then the F, though its still not the best. I don’t know if that is due to the cables or simply down to the fact the TF has a shorter gearlever. I know several F owners who have shortened thier levers (and a couple of TF owners) and opinion is that it does improve the feel. --

FWIW I recently had the engine & subframe dropped out for a 60k service & new clutch. When I picked the car up it was noticeable that the gearchange feel had improved. So it does make me wonder if there are some simple adjustments that can be made to reduce slack in the mechanism and improve the feel.
