Hi guys, some of you might remember ages ago I had some nasty wheel vibration issues with a new set of 15" minilite-alikes when at speed.

I changed the kingpins recently (less than 1000 miles) and with the original wheels ir realy made a difference, almost night and day. All was well and I was happy. I've jsut been out wth the 15" wheels on it and theres no difference whatsoever from before.

a quick recap -

Big vibrations through the sterring at over 55mph, feels like unbalanced wheels but stops and starts randomly in 40-50 sec bursts. Going over bumps in road seems to make it worse. Wheels all checked for balance and have swapped front to back etc to be sure....

Could this be down to crap cheaply made wheels? (but i would expet that to show up when i had them re-balnced perhaps) Theyre not original minilites.

No obvious slack in the steering either. Im confused.com. (and a pit annoyed)

cheers,

neil

Firstly grease your front suspension. I get at least one customer a month bringing a car for a service saying it needs new kingpins and it just needs grease pumping in (remember this is really a weekly or monthly job), makes a huge difference.

Also how wide are your wheels, if they are these monster 8 or 9 inch ones for sebring kits then it will be putting big wear on your bearings.

Go to a good tyre bay and explain the problem an ask them to balance the wheels and see if they can see any issues while balancing, if you can find a good tyre man they are worth their weight in gold.

Other than that provided you don't have any play in rack or any of the bushes you shouldn't be getting this vibration. It could be harmonics but I doubt it.

Your engine mounts are ok aren't they? If this is happening on acceleration it isn't suspension at all but the engine catching steering shaft.

Thanks for the reply...

Suspension is/was nicely greased and i 'top it up' so to speak every 2-3k. Perhaps a little sxessive but still. The wheels are 15" with 185 tyres on them. They only rub at the back but thats another issue!

Engine mounts ok. Wheels have been checked for balance (twice now) and all is ok. This happens at constant speed, not just under load. I'm begining to think its a defect in the wheels though as with the rostyles on there are no issues. I'm going to see if i can get my hands on some 14" miniltes and see what happens with though perhaps. Could the wheels being lighter have any bearing on this?

If the vibration didn;t stop and start ranbomly when you go down the road i'd think it was unbalanced wheels, but wheels out of balance at a constant speed wouldn't behave like that....

The only time I've had this is on wires where they haven't seated the wheel on the balancer properly.

If it's on on the rostys it must be the wheels.......In theory at least.

Don't worry about the rear rubbing if it's polishing your springs so to speak, I've had it myself.
