Hi All,

Thought I would use the site people have said do much about.

I am looking for some inspiration, I have recently got into Road Racing on my bicycle, and need to transport it around along with necessary kit.

I bought an estate car as the answer and am due to sell the my MG BGT (1978) as I am worried about the damage my bike could do to the interior of the car. (The bike just fits with both the wheels off)

I now realise that I cant sell my dream car (my MGB GT) as I wasnt even able to pick the phone up to autotrader (sad I know).

So.. I am looking for a solution. I rang the MGOC, they have detailed that no bike racks fit on the roof (I even recall they said there isnt even a roof rack, due to the flimsyness of the ridges).

Any thoughts?

I have come up with putting a towbar on the back of the MG, and then getting a tow bar mounted carrier. But was wondering how easy fitting a tow bar would be (whether the car would have the appropriate mountings), and whether it effects the car in anyway, i.e. the weight of the bike rack would damage the underneath of the car? or similar?

Hopefully if i can sort this, i can get rid of my boring estate car. If not any ideas for a classic estate car would be interesting, so far I have a reliant scimitar, and a volvo P1800 ES

Thanks

Fitting a towbar is simple, I actually have one for your car sat in my workshop which I wouldn't want much for. Or with the car being a hatch bcak I have used the clip on rear ones before, but they will mark your paint. Failing that just stick some thick sheets down inside and use them to protect the interior.

The only problem with the tow bar ones on an mgb will be that I think the bike will be much wider than the car, might be alright with the front or both wheels off. I came across an old but immaculate Thule roof rack recently which I thought would come in handy for the car, having put the one on the front,no problems, but at the rear, because the gutters sit a couple of inches below the roof, as I tightened it up the clamp was starting to push into the paintwork just above the gutter.Other gutter roof racks will prob have different fitting mechanisms, so just thought I would let you know.Surely cycle racks that fit to roof racks are universal. Been meaning for weeks to see if I can fit the mountain bike in the car, tried getting it in the back of a Shogun the other day cos of the rain, ended up getting wet!

regarding the Mountain Bike, it will be worth a try, as my road bike fits with both wheels off!
