A relatively recent acquisition is 74 B GT Man O/D which is technically my sons but as with such things I seem to acquire a share in it when something goes wrong!
When we bought it I was aware that the gear change was nothing like as precise as it should be... In fact there is a good 2" of play at the top of the stick when in gear Although once you find a gear the box itself is fine. I suspect that the PO left something out when 'rebuilding' it but its so long since I had one of these apart that I really cant easily visualise what it might be that he left out. (I can best describe it as though there is a ball joint seating missing somewhere in the remote linkage)

Nothing will surprise me as I dont think the PO owned a torque wrench! just did everything up finger tight I think, every damn thing keeps falling off... Crank Pulley bolt went walkaouts last night causing some very interetsing noises as the pulley bounces back & forth off the rack!

Anyway, question is: Any guesses whats casuing it and should I attempt to do something from underneath or does it sound like an engine and box out job?

Any advice welcome and sorry my first post is a request for help!.

plastic bush on bottom of gearlever at a guess.

Although did and still do have a roadster with a very strange box, when in third gear you can only pull it out of gear by using pressure against right hand side of gate, the gearlever is totally floppy and will seemingly engage any other gear but remains in third. TBH I left it because it didn't get worse, and provided the most amazing anti theft device when left in third! Plus it was most amusing watching friends try to drive it! hehe

At a guess your problem is the plastic bush.

I've got a spare crank pulley bolt if you want one, can pop it in the post.

Thanks to both...

Oliver, presumeably that is best done from inside the car so will check that tonight.

Huntsman, Thanks for the kind offer but I have already got sorted on the pulley bolt. Just got to lock the crank up tight enough to torque it up!

thanks again for swift and positive responses!

remove gearlever ring. remove gearknob. remove gaiter lifting over lever now it is free.

You should see 3 bolts holding a plate which in turn holds the gear lever in place. remove these bolts and the springs underneath. Keep safe.

Lift lever out of hole.

Is there a plastic bush underneath? I bet not.

You would indeed have won your bet Oliver! PO obviously lost it and couldnt be bothered to source a replacement so just put up with it.

So, anyone got one lying around or is it a b hive jobby? (should there be a spring beneath the plastic cup.. often is with some other makes)

Thanks again for your help guys

Its literally just a plastic press on tube almost with a ball joint in one end of it.

Try B hive, if no luck I have a few spare boxes up here and can send you one, obviously would only do that if the part is NLA.
