Hi, I'm no mechanic so please bear with me!

I have a MG ZS TD+ which I've had from new and done 117k in. It's a sept 2003 model. On Sunday I noticed some blue smoke when under load (5 adults plus luggage, 300 mile trip) as I got near home. 5 mile later it changed to black smoke when under load and there was a definite loss of power under acceleration.

I found a hose that runs from the radiator to the turbo that was split. From this, some oil had been thrown onto the engine which I assume caused the smoke. Yet, I had lost very little oil (maybe 1 pint gone which was filled 9k miles ago - she never uses any!). The hose is very thick and I assume is the air intake?

Does it sound likely this could account for a noticible lack of power or is there some other potential problem?

Thanks in anticipation.

Could be. If it runs from the turbo to the intercooler and has split then you'll be losing boost which will effectively make your car normally aspirated eek

Hi, thanks for your reply. Actually, that's exactly how I'd describe the power loss. It 'feels' like the turbo isn't working. There are no strange noises, the power is smooth (just not much of it), there's no surge when the turbo cuts in (mind you, as soon as I noticed the problem I drove gently, so that could be unfair).

If you have oil getitng into the intake tract from the turbo, then it sounds as though the turbo seals might be one the way out?

Yes, I thought the oil was strange, but I wondered if that could be due to the change of pressure soemhow (but I'm no mechanic).

The hose is a dealer part so it's on order now smile

It shouldn't be, as the air pressure created within the tract from the turbo outlet headed for the inlet manifold would have just leaked out of the hose split rather than continued on into the engine as it should. Plus, the bearings are fed by the engine system and if the bearings and seals are working properly, no oil should be escaping via the turbo seals irrespective of pressure differentials (bear in mind it copes normally with the on/off of engine demand. Aside from having a good clean out of the inlet tract from the turbo, it would also be worth checking the pipe from the air filter to the turbo - if there is a rocker cover breather linked into that, that might be the source of your oil. Have a thorough clean of the whole tract and then check after running it on the road for a few days or so whether you have oil reappearing. If it is not from a rocker cover breather, then it will, I'm afraid, probably be the turbo seals/bearings.

Hi Mark, many thanks for that. There is some oil around the breather, a friend got a hose from a dealer today and it's fitted, cleaned etc.

Got 150 mile day tomorrow, so that should say if it's cured smile

If it is, I'll be very happy with £43 for the hose and an oil top up.

I've had about 80 cars and I've kept this one nearly 5 years and done 117k which says how much I like it!
