There is a check on the DVLA website that tells you what details they have on your car like year of manufacture, colour and date the tax is due, there is also a motor insurance db, that will tell you whether its insured and dependant on the results it will give you an idea whether it still existis.

I am after my old Mk1 Capri's wherabouts, used to be easy as I worked for the Police years ago in the pre data-protection days, nowdays its the methods above to see if its still around as if not its probably been scrapped, if it is showing as my Capri still does on both it still around, try the various MG owners clubs, register a post a thread asking if anyone knows its wherabouts.

So, anyone know where my Capri is, it was a 1969 1600 GT-XLR, I think its fitted with a 3.0 litre now.

Someone on Scoobynet provided the links, will see if I can dig them out.

If you don't know the full registration number the DVLA site is of liitle value - if you cannot find that out, then try a letter appealing for help to the MG Car Club and the MG Owners Club.
