Hi, think the head gasket has just gone on my MGF Trophy - only done 25k (2001).

Oil light came on and lost water, I've put oil and water in and restarted the car (didn't lose anything).

Any idea what the cost of replacing the head gasket is and if any damage it likely

Thanks

Mark

Unfortuantely that is the way with Fs, and 25k is about the right sort of mileage for it to happen! If you haven't come across the MGF Register, you will find bags of information about the F and TF here:

http://fregister.proboards37.com/index.cgi#general

with particular reference to costs here:

Not sure exactly where you are located, but the best person I know of who will do a great job and not rip you off is the said Stan Smith in Sutton near Ely - he runs the company , is an ex-Rover mechanic who worked on the F from its inception, knows them very well, and is enthusiastic about the cars. Super bloke to deal with and can be contacted on 07884 226716. The costs I have seen quoted by others who have used him range from £5-700 depending on what sort of damage may have been done

Sorry should have added that - don't drive the car if it is losing significant quantities of oil and water, particularly if they have mixed (tell tales are oil floating on the top of the coolant in the expansion tank and "mayonnaise" in the oil. Damage done can't really be assessed until the engione is dismantled
