Can anyone point me in the direction of any good books, websites etc to do some reading on tuning the B-series. Thanks.

This should be a good start.

I have a copy - it's pretty comprehensive, and includes details of a number of different states of tune from standard up to crazy race-spec.

Here's another vote for Peter Burgess' book!
It will, however, make you want to do much more work on the engine then you do now biggrin

I'm about to buy the same book, I have the Jaguar XK one in the series, different author, I was disappointed with the Jaguar one, it did not seem to lay out the options and what could be achieved in a structured manner. Hope the MG one is a better book.

It is, and Peter's a great guy to deal with. Have dealt with him twice (cylinder heads on both occasions) and he happily supplied advice for the build of one of the engines (which was done by Octarine Services, fwiw).

yep petes a top bloke, he's built two a series race engines for me in the past. Technically he knows his stuff and wont try to sell you things you dont really need. Just dont be put off by the fag packet notes of cylinder chamber depths etc....

try this..its a site I'm featured on and shows all the tricks I used on my car.

basic tips for tuning are getting the car to breath properly) not just K&N's but the butterflys/poppets in the SU's,having the mechanical and electrical timing sorted (123 or EDIS good for electrical), getting the best from the head, getting the best from the exhaust...everything should be done in harmony otherwise you waste your money.

If you are going to tune the engine to improve top enmd speed and/or acceleration, please don't forget to include uprating the brakes and suspension appropriately at the same time, otherwise you just arrive at the scene of the accident that bit quicker....

Found a copy of the book on eBay, just awaiting delivery now. Looking forward to reading it.

Brake upgrade is one of the things first on the list, second thing will be lowering the car by a couple of inches all round.

Many years ago I used to have a Ford 107E Prefect fitted with the 1500GT engine from a Mk1 Cortina - so I have the "brakes need 3 weeks notice in writing" T-shirt already (and the matching soiled underwear! laugh).

I can recommend Mintex 1144 brake pads and shoes, have them on my crossflow engined roadster (124 horsies at the wheels) and they do a terrific job at stopping them, even from cold. Do follow the bedding in procedure though...

I've just been reading it over the weekend, very very good book.

When you finish doing whatever Peter B tempts you into doing on the B book a rolling road session at his workshop.

I took a quite satisfactory road tuned Midget to his place and came back with a really quick beastie.

Combined with a workshop visit to warm the cockles of any engineers heart it was a truly memorable day out...

Have the Minitex pads but standard dics...what are the upgrades of Mintex pads? (anyone?)

I bought some Austin Princess 4 pots for my brake upgrade, but decided that standard with superior pads would be good enough..for now.

What type of Mintex pads do you have? Because I seem to recall they offer different types...

M1144...recommmended by Doug at MG Motorsport...gave a little tip to that normal pads work better if you take off the dust shield..as I'm not rallying in mine it sounds quite reasonable...better cooling..

whats the trick with o/d 3rd then..

(ps car going for bead blasting this weekend)
