MGF - Seat Not Reclining

Having a problem with the reclining mechanism on the driver's seat - it seems to be stuck in the upright position. When turning the dial to recline the back, there is little resistance and no movement of the seat back. Does anyone have any experience of this or know of a way to investigate without taking the seat out?

We've taken off the dial to ensure it's not due to shorn plastic on the dial.
