Might the coolant have been over filled?
K series are often tricky to check oil levels on . Let it settle overnight and check it cold in the morning to see if its still way too high. Also, when you take the dipstick out, wipe it, wait 30 secs before you put it back in and then remove again to take your reading.

The coolant was ok because i do keep an eye on it, i've rechecked the oil and it still alittle high but only a little. I've had a look round the engine bay and can't find anything. Also i've taken it for a drive as and the temp for oil and water were normal as was the cars performance the only thing that bothers me is why it overheated with the fan working
If the head gasket had failed, there would be a smell of fuel in the water coolant and you should be able to see steam marks on the block where the gasket was leaking. Sounds as if you caught it in time to prevent the head warping and the gasket leaking.
It has been warm recently, it's a mid engine car and if you were idling for a long time while you did the MOT it's entirely possible that the fan just wasn't good enough to cool the radiator.
