I have a Morris marina van with a Jag rear axle. The rear back end has been shortened by 2 ft and turned into a pickup. Roof chopped and raked. 12" wolfrace Ford wheels on rear, 8 inch on front. Could not find a good V8 so just to finish fitted an MGB 1800. It has 270/2 cam, ported head and polished with balanced combustion chambers.Balanced pistons and con rods. Drill lightend Flywheel, 100 pound Nos fitted but afraid to try yet . Twin large SU's. I would love to see pictures of other peoples cars in stage of rbuild, especially the engines. also want to know how far you can grind in to the valve guides before hitting a water jacket. I would be please to hear of items for sale. i would like an Ali flywheel or machine lightened, crossflow head, stronger rockers. Dry sump, 30+ pistons would be great with rings. Infact any advice and parts. Next year when its painted a V8 injected will be fitted but at present I just want it on the road and painted. I had three MGB engines laying round so thats why i used one of those,I could do with more or at least heads to practice further porting on. Ken

I have some engines you can have, £40 each good solid lumps either rebuild or replace headgaskets and go (heads just been taken off to check valve size and then refitted to engine).

However I am confused as to why you would want to grind a valve guide down so much that you would get near the water jacket? (Incidentally very unlikely on a B) to get the best flow results take the peak of the guide off, but then of course you will drastically reduce the life of the guide.

Thanks for reply. I am in the inlet and exhaust ports, near the manufolds. I want to grind out the guide supports but not sure how far to go. I know the engine will wear faster, but the valve heads and stems have been reworked. And I have it as a fun car only, 5k per 6 months then replace engine is no probs.

where are you and any info on the engines as boring and grinding is so expensive now I rob and build. Got a V8 4.3 in shed, fit that next year, but at the moment i am content on blowing MGBS.

The build of my crossflow engine is at Chris Betson's site.

The spec of the engine includes:
- Bored to 1950cc
- Custom forged JE pistons, 11:1 CR
- Piper 285 cam
- Lightend flywheel, balancing of rotating bits
- Original HRG Derrington aluminium crossflow head, modified to race/rally spec by Peter Burgess (44 mm & 34 mm valves)
- Dell'Orto 40 DHLA carbs (set up by PB as well)
- Aldon modified distributor
- Custom made Sachs-Boge clutch & clutch cover
...

Makes 124 bhp at the wheels!

Mine are standard late MGB engines, I think one has been taken out +20, they are big valve motors, and both are from yank cars so unleaded heads as far as I am aware.

Both got perfect oil pressure, no knocks etc.

I'm in East Yorkshire, however next weekend I'm travelling down to London area down A1 or M1 and could arrange for a small fee to deliver one or two.

I have a nearly new moss super charger if you are intrested,I am fitting a V6 to my B I could not squeeze enough bhp out of the 1800. Peter Burgess recons 140 bhp max at the wheels with one of his 1950 engines supercharged there are photos on the net of a cross flowed supercharged engine with an alleged 270 bhp, god knows what boost they were running if they did manage that figure.
