Sorry if this has been posted before but a friend of mine has an MGF and he's really struggling to get tyres for it, with no local garages able to get them.

Could anyone recommend where to get some and what tyres are good for the F if the OEM ones aren't available any more? What size are the standard tyres?

He is in the Derby area if it helps.

thanks

Paul

I think the Toyo Proxes T1-R gets a good write up for the MGF.Standard sizes for the MG are:
Front 185-55-15
Rear 205-50-15 I think.

Should cost £50-£60 a corner.

Hi Paul,

I need a bit more info about the car. What year is it? Some of the earlier models (1995-late 1998) only had the option of 15inch alloys, but from 1999 onwards there was a 15inch and 16inch alloy option depending on whether it's an 1.8 mpi (base model) or VVC.

For example, I have a 1998 mpi, and so have the standard 15inch alloys on it. There are a huge range of tyres out there, however the ones a lot of people are raving about (and I have them fitted to mine and love them) are Toyo Proxes T1-R's. I think these are available in both 15 and 16 inch (a mate of mine has 17inch alloys on his F, and has Toyos on that). As a guide, I paid £55 per tyre on the front and £60 per tyre on the rear.

I can't see why your local garages would have a problem getting the Toyos, since they are widely available, but if they can't get them, there are a whole host of websites out there who will deliver either to your house or to the garage.

Anyway, loads more info at the following site: http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/tyre

Hope this helps!

Ah beaten to it by esselte! Just though, with regards to the sizes (assuming your friend's F has 15inch alloys) is that the fronts will happily take 195/55/15 as well as the standard 185/55/15.

Also, just had a quick search, try Black Circles, never used them myself but they seem to have a good reputation.

Avon ZV1 are good value for money.
Not so great on a rainy day but quite controlable if you don't play stupid.

I've used Black Circles for my TF with no problems at all. Fitted GY F1s all round, which was the tyre fitted to the car when new. Not the cheapest of tyres but excellent grip and reasonable value for money compared to the Toyos which wear out at least twice as quickly in my experience.
