TF 160 VVC noises and other bits
Discussion
Picked up the misses a nice 04 TF160 at the weekend, drove a few and thought they were all a little clickerty on the top end but paid no real attention as they all appear to do it. Had it a few days now and listening in the garage, were its a lot quieter background, I can't help wondering if there really is something amiss or are they all like it, in TVR terms TADTS...They All Do That Sir .
Cars done 21K, FMGSH, oils full, noise dies away as revs pick up.
Whilst here the other minor issue, after I adjusted the brake light switch that is, is the throttle response. There was a dead spot at the start of travel which I've cleared by taking up the slack in the cable. It is difficult to get light throttle openings it ticks over at 750rpm ish (on tacho) and with a slight depression of the throttle it goes to 1.5Krpm can't get anything in between, is this normal . Its all right when on load and driving around but just when sitting there getting the revs up to pull away, you feel like a right pratt as if you want to doa drag start. The throttle itself also seems a little stiff, and yes it was the same before I took the slack out.
Any tips chaps/chapesses, ta in advance :thumbup.

Harry,
The tappety sound a bit of a TADTS case. The VVC's got more of a reputation for this, although my F mpi did it. Is there a pattern to the time the noise happens or is it totally random? I mean, mine did when it was cold, warm, there wasn't any correlation at all. Finally I used a hydraulic tappet conditioner which has silenced it competely.
BTW, not many F/TF's use this forum as the online MG community is so vast. Try www.mgcars.org you'll get a lot more replys on there.

Thanks for the reply, what's a hydraulic tappet conditioner .
The noise is there cold or warm below 2k rpm, not a harsh noise just bloody annoying, perhaps a sports exhaust for e misses will mask it .
I did toy with posting a similar thread on the Lotus forum as the 160 is used on some Elise's I believe.

Hmm I remember the K series was used in early Elises, so they might be able to help.
Is the noise we're talking about a kind of ticking which increases in time with revving the engine? If it's this then it's most probably the hydraulic tappets. Hydraulic tappet conditioner was recommended to me by a friend, bought mine in Halfords for around £7.00. You do need to be careful though, as sometime it can do more harm than good. Make sure it doesn't have Teflon or anything similar in it as this might clog the tappets rather than free them up.

You sure it`s not the scissors clicking H? You should have got a MR2 mate
I'm just getting used to the different noises of anew car, the misses says what noise. It would appear to common to the VVC gear itself, it obviously needs sports exhaust to drown it out me thinks
Another 200 brake wouldn`t go amiss either

know what you mean, nearer 300 with the Cerb . Lots of noise and no real go, at least its easier to keep it legal
The VVCs are generaly noisier than the non-VVC units. The eccentirc drive units required some seriously precision engineering to minimise backlash, word is that the internals were sized to get the required tolerances. It clearly doesn't take much wear tp make them a little noisy. There is a mod to increase oil level within the units that is supposed to reduce noise, have a hunt on http://forums.mg-rover.org
