Hello everyone, just signed up and wanted to introduce myself. I am 15 and have bought my first MG midget. I am sure that i will be needing lots of advice regarding the restoration and if anyone hears of a cheap bodyshell please tell me .

If anyone has any recommendations for cheap car insurance for young drivers (18) then i would love to hear.

Thanks

Try A-Plan:

www.aplan.co.uk/motor/mgf-insurance-quote.php?int=

They do a specialist scheme for MGF owners but might be able to do you a good deal

For insurance try Footman James. My insurance with them has been £200 since I was seventeen on my midget. Now its down to £150- now I'm 25 (fully comp, unlimited miles, full euro recovery). Can't beat that.

That is an amazing price. Although i have been quoted 1500 - 2500 and it says on the footman james website that you have to be over 25. Thanks Anyway

Try getting someone else to be the named driver. Given your age I expect you are still at home so that shouldn't be an issue. Parents maybe?

Hi!

Is that a typo in your age, or are you really planning your insurance 2+ years in advance??

Whatever you do, don't consider anything other than a classic policy for your midget. This will make the difference between an insurer thinking "young kid looking to rag a convertible around" and "young kid interested in the car he's got and probably going to look after it", which should go a long way to negating your age disadvantage!

Good luck with it!

Hi, I am planning my insurance 2 years in advance because it is that which will determine whether i keep the car or get something else. I have had trouble getting quotes off classic car insurers because of the fact that on most you have to be over 21 to qualify. Of course when i pass my driving test i shall be 18 and this is where the problem lies. Thanks for the suggestions. James

Spridgets are quite possibly the most under-rated sports cars around. You're unlikely to find a cheaper car to insure that is anywhere NEAR as much fun. They're excellent cars to learn about car handling, and even better cars to learn about wielding a spanner. (Also screw driver, body filler, welder and spray gun.)

Somebody posted a link to the Sprites and Midgets BBS about 2 posts ago. It's an excellent forum with some immensely knowledgeable people. You will use it when things fall off or smoke leaks happen.

Look at joining the MG Owners' Club (which is really a business) or the MG Car Club, or the Sprite and Midget Owners' Club. You may be able to qualify for insurance if there are club schemes. Be warned, there appear to be religious wars between the different clubs!

I wouldn't make any decision about keeping the car based on quotes received 2 years in advance, a lot can change in any any industry but probably will in the insurance world If I was your age (I wish!) I would start any form of Motorsport that requires a recognised Licence and get a quote based on your 'track record' when applicable.

You don't know how lucky you are. Because of your comments above, my partner has just rung Footman James.

Normal MGF 1.8i, no modifications, factory fitted alarm and immobilisor, 1999 plate, both to drive, only 9k miles per year, protected no claims.

We are both middle age, full no cliams bonus, no claims or anything in living memory.

Quote is £500. Five hundred of your English pounds. 50% more expensive than our current quote, and we are both sensible drivers, nothing special about the car, not young, and no claims.

How have you got it for £150. Is it because me and my beloved are paying for you!!!

Before anybody asks, no we WON'T be going to Footman James!!! I recommend you try confused dot com. It saved me over £100.

Regards
Sally

Try Peter Best who advertises in clasic MG magazines, or one those companies. Direct Line, I believe which claims to give no claim discount to named drivers on Dad`s policy.

I bought my 1st MG when I was 21 and insured with the company I was working for then. Then it was in 1961 and different times! It was a TA.

I have a ZR 105 now insured with Peter Best, fully comp, unlimited mileage for £225 pa.To the MGF owners post, try them. See his ad in MG Enthusiast or Safety Fast.

Hello every1, stumbled across this site whilest looking up how to get trade plates.....bit random but there you go!

My name is Ami(incase you couldnt work that one out) I'm 23 and I deal in MGF's for fun. My dad has worked with MG's all his life, midgets, mgb roadsters and gt's. He used to restore then for a hobby but now he has grandchildren he'd rather spend his spare time with them (bless) so the MG enthusiasm has been passed on to me

I've got 2 MGFs myself and absolutely love them (I also have a roadster that needs restoring if I ever get chance)!!! they are my life after my daughter of course

So anyway don't want to bore anyone that has taken the time to read this message......Just wanted to say hello so....... "Hello!"
