Hey,

I’m about to be 17 and start my proper driving lessons, and I’ve been looking at what to get for my first car. I have always loved the MGB MK II roadster and I would adore that to be my first car however I’m not too sure where to start with it. Questions about insurance, cost, maintenance have all been in my head.

Is an MGB a good starting car for a 17 year old? I’m aware that I would probably need classic insurance for this car (correct me if I’m wrong) and is that gunna be too expensive to start with. Also, I’m aware that insurance can be cheaper if you have a more experienced driver on it, however I’m wondering does that still ring true even if I’m a new driver. Would that affect anything at all?

I’ve been looking at some other cars such as the midget as well to try and widen my search as much as possible. I’ve also been trying to find some that aren’t convertibles as I’m aware that they can be more expensive however I haven’t came across any that jumps out to me. If anyone has any suggestions of any cars that would be within the saloon type and still reasonable for a first car, please let me know. It doesn’t have to be an MG, however I would prefer it to be.

A final topic that I have been wondering about is reliability. Eg, space, breakdowns etc… I’m aware that I should be expecting at least one breakdown a year with an MGB. Also, the boot space I could get rid of the spare wheel from it and just carry things such as a pump and a tyre kit etc. is this car, or cars of similar quality good for everyday usage and/or longer road trips now and again through the country. Would they be reliable? Would they cost loads to run/maintain? Would they be better than a midget or something like that as an alternative?

Im aware that is a lot of questions, I just want to know what I’m getting into and if I would regret it later on.

Thanks, 😄
