After my last question 2 weeks ago, Ive now got loads of ideas as to what Im going to do with my midget.

But... One thing I am considering is a 5 speed conversion, - is a conversion a whole replacement of the gear box??! or an alteration on the box already there?

Sorry to ask what might be the dumbest question ever, but its a big learning curve for me and Im getting there.. honest.

Also - any ideas where I can get a full respray that wont cost the earth~? Im in hants but would travel depending

OK can answer the gearbox Q but not the respraying bit

You have a few choices and it will depend on Money, what work you want to do.

The more money spent the less you need to do

There are several boxes you could use. The 2 most common are the toyota cellica gearbox (I have this in my turboed one very good reliable and the gear lever is in the same place as the original) But rare to get hold of one espcially from a scrapyard
Or what has now become the most common is the sierra T5 box found in 1.6 to 2 litre models from the top of my head. And dead easy to find in scrappers. But this one requires you to have the gear stick comming out about 3-4 inches back then the original hole. This isnt a bad thing since I made a small recess into the original hole to put things like change, etc holds a carton of milk great. And the gear stick is realy short so I just rest my arm on the tunnel and throw it through the gears

You could go to Frontline which is where I got most of the bits for my conversion for the sierra T5 box.
You dont need all of the bits since as in my case I created a use for the original hole rather than blanking it off. You dont need the gear stick since you can use the one of the sierra cut it down heavily (ie below the vibration section) and weld your original end on so you can screw your gearstick top on.
You could go to Morris Minor in birmingham that supplied Arno's converison (On my web site with some pics of the job) This was cheaper than front line for what is effectivly the same bits of kit.
Or if your brave you could create most of the bits yourself. For example you will need to change the bell housing of the ford to mate up with the engine, shorten the propshaft etc. Personly I wouldnt do the propshaft my self since its spinning very quickly.
Id also guess that peter may engineering (Search on the web for them) would also do a conversion.

Expect to be paying around 400 to 500 total including a scrapyard gearbox. This might be a lot but in the long run your far less likely to break than the original midget box and the engine will be running at less revs for the same speed

I also remeber reading somewhere of a chap doing the conversion from scratch and made all the parts him self (again this was somewhere I found on google so probably still out there)
