Camshaft - is this right?

I think it must be as I can't see how it can go in any other way, but it's always good to check innit...
With the camshaft in and flush with the front of the block (as held in place by the thrust plate)...
...the rest of the bearings are all offset - sticking out one side of the bearing shells by a couple of mm:
It feels like they should really all line up; but to do that, the front bearing ends up sticking out, which can't be right. This is a new cam, but I've checked against the old one and it's the same. So either I'm missing something, or "they're all like that sir". It just seems a very odd bit of engineering to me, if that's how it's supposed to be.
Anyone know?
