MGB - Kenlow style electric fan

I'm looking for a bit of advice. I have been slowly bringing my 1974 BGT back to life ready for the road after 15 years dry stored in the garage.
Nearing the end of the (long) list of bits to replace I decided to change the water pump for a new one. In doing so the existing fan seems to have been bodged on with a home made spacer and I suspect the fan is the wrong one for the car.
Looking at the usual suppliers a replacement fan is around £55-60. I was, in the future, planning to fit an electric fan when cash was a bit more available. However now I'm asking if I would be better installing the electric fan now rather than paying out £55 for a mechanical version.
As this is a common modification I was hoping someone out there can shed some light on the advantages of the upgrade and any pitfalls.
