I've currently got a GT V8 with a LT77 gearbox, it wasn't the best when I fitted it and it's even worse now, won't always select 2nd/3rd / tailhousing bearing is sloppy / clutch hasn't lasted well.

In the workshop I have a 4HP22 from a Jag and a 4HP22 from a 3.9 Range Rover Classic, plan is to take the bellhousing etc from the RRC box and attach it to the Jag box, bolt up then fit. However I can't seem to find anyone having done this conversion on a MGB already, which makes me wonder if there will be a stumbling block/issue around fitting? I'm also not sure which shifter to use with the auto in the BGT.

Be interested to hear thoughts

Assuming it physically fits down the tunnel and your aware you will need to get a custom prop made I see no reason not to other than the obvious auto issue.

Generally doing an auto transplant is easier than a manual in many ways. You'll want all the control apparatus off the auto V8 of course with kick down cables etc.

You'll probably want an external oil cooler too. The standard mgb/mgc auto type would make sense.

Would an MGB/mgc auto shifter work? Possibly cobbled together with bits from the Jag shifter? I've got a load of mg auto bits here (including boxes) if I can help with any bits.

I've got the complete setup from a range rover classic, so no issues with kickdown parts etc as far as I know. The engine is currently on a Edelbrock inlet/carb but I also have most of the parts to convert to EFI, which I may complete at the same time.

Interesting about the MG shifter, I might look into that. The other option is the bulky RRC/D1/D2 shifter, but that will look ugly in the BGT. How much would you want for a shifter, if you had one?

Prop is no issue, I can get something made. Oil cooler shouldn't be too hard either, fit behind the front valence, is this where it was fitted on a factory auto?

Cheers

Oh not a lot. Drop me a pm and I'll see what I've got. I saw one today so I know I have at least one.

I do have an original mg dual oil cooler too. The autos had a slightly smaller engine oil cooler with an add on transmission cooler attached under it. Basically it looks like the manual cooler but is 2 in one. I don't need it as I'm converting my auto to manual and any cash I get from it can go towards a new manual cooler. Unlike most used coolers though you can guarantee this doesn't have anything nasty in it as it's come off a working gearbox and engine and is currently still connected up so hasnt been open to the atmosphere on a dusty shelf for years.
