I went to test-drive the Midget 1500 I've got my eye on last night. It drives beautifully, but the clutch took some getting used to. Both my partner and I stalled when we first tried to pull away, and he continued to do so.
Is this normal for Midgets? Obviously it's not going to put me off buying it, as otherwise it's a great vehicle. However, if there's something I could/should do about it, it would be useful to know.
Also, does anyone know where I can get the 'MIDGET' letters from for the side panel? I've looked at the online catalogue through the MGOC, but no joy. I suspect they may have a particular name which I'm not aware of.

Midget clutches can be funny. Both of mine have since been modified to have a 5spd mox but still the clutch bites quite low down, you will get used to it.
As for the Midget letters you could try MechSpec they tend to have everything ive ever needed.

Why dont you get a 72 or ealier midget then you will be tax excempt as well and could go mad and fit a turbo to your A-series if you want it to be faster than the rubber bumper midget

Your wiring will be different from mine, but it all depends on what is and isnt standard. On my pre 72 midgets there was no radio so thats new wiring by who ever.
Im going to guess that the red wire your on about is carring the +ve 12 volts from either direct from your battery or via the ignition switch. So all you would need would be a earth which you can get from any bare metal surface of the car.
If you need more specific help would need to know your model number eg GN1234567 so I can look on the wiring diagram for it. You might also find if you do a search on google the wiring diagrams.

I can't find out the model number until this evening as it's a two-person job to open the bonnet at the moment...

Unfortunately, a previous owner had a CD changer fitted, so there are loads of wires disappearing under the carpet to God knows where. I could test each individually to find the live, but I thought someone might just know.

I would assume then that the red wire if it passed through the fire wall and is now attached to nothing in the engine bay, id say attach it to the +ve terminal to the battery and hay presto you have 12+ line. Else take one from the ignition live if you want it switchable with the ignition.

I remember mine giving me some hassle a year ago, was very glad when I fixed it. Was a big pain opening the bonnet by reaching up through the front wheel arch

I found with the 5 spd toyota gearbox conversion the gearstick is in the same position as a standard gear box, I too had the problem of changing station when changing to first. Solution is to shorten the gearstick or put a slight bend in the shaft to take it back about 5 degrees which will also solve the problem.
Nice jump suit, ive got a similar one somewhere but dont have a wind in the hair plane to wear it in. It sticks out like a saw thumb if I jump in a twin in one.
