MGF lack of Gear change
Discussion
Got a 1999 MGF and have just developed a problem. When engine isn't running I can move gearstick into any gear including reverse. When engine is running I can't get it into any gear at all. If I put it into 1st gear, hold down clutch and start the engine, can move off and change into 3rd and 4th gears with a bit of a shunt. Anyone any ideas whats happened?
defo a clutch problem.
my attack plan would be
1, check fluid level and for leaks. If the fluid hasn't been changed in a few years I would change and bleed the system just as a maintenance thing.
2, check the movement of the clutch arm at the slave cyl. you been looking for about 25 to 30mm. If not, do a search on the web for clutch actuating arm upgrade.
3, remove gearbox and replace the arm and clutch plates.
All should be well for another 100k miles

Also worth looking at a seized clutch arm, which these cars are notorious for.
The clutch arm has no protection from the crap coming up on the road, which causes it to seize over time.
Symptoms similar to clutch failure, and will eventually take the clutch with it ( as it did in my case)
