just bought MG TF 160... when should i do the cam belt ?
Discussion
Hi I just bought an OCT 02 TF 160 privately.. one owner from new the gent I bought it from. FSH and genuine 36k.. head gasket upgrade and cambelt done on 2006 as preventative measure...along with ss pipes car did most of its miles in first three years.... since then minimum miles, as in 500 per year verified by MOT and services..
So.. the question.. cambelt is 7-8 years old but its probably seen 4k miles.... car has been garaged and done good weather only.
when should I do the cam belt.
thanks

Cam belts on the TF160 are due every 4 years or 60K miles (whichever occurs sooner), so the previous owner missed a belt change that was due in 2010, and it should have then been due again this year.
So the answer is ASAP, as its now 7-8 years overdue.
I would investigate the FSH (which clearly isn't full) and check which other service items have or haven't been done to schedule, and get anything thats been missed done at the same time.
FYI Here is the service schedule so you can see what should have been done each year.

Hi Mac,
Not sure if you are a previous MG owner, or if you are intending to do the work yourself, but there are some very good (and a few equally bad) mobile mechanics who can do the work for a lot less than a garage will charge.
If you decide to get the work done by someone, would be well worth your while joining MG-rover.org, or you want, you can drop me a line, and I can chuck a few names your way.
Enjoy the car!
