My son has just finished at Glasgow Uni and the drive back to Skipton on Saturday seems to have done terminal damage to his engine, having sat in stationery traffic for nearly two hours in baking temperatures on the M74.

As a currently unemployed student finances are tight (very!) and bank of dad is currently stretched!

Does any one have or know of a 1500 engine which could be acquired for sensible money, I am happy to travel though anything in Yorkshire would be a bonus.

Thanks

for any help on this.

Can't help i am afraid but can the engine not be saved? I know it doesn't help but did he not turn off the engine if he was sat on the motorway not moving? Or was it crawling?

I'm sure someone abit more helpful will be along soon.

I Understand it was just a slow crawl on the M74, car was recovered back to Skipton and now refusing to start, yet to start stripping anything off but from the description and symptoms it sounds pretty terminal

I Have popped a post up on the BBS for you. . for those that know the 1500 better than I, but further details will help them help you.

Did it overheat.
any smoke, if so what colour.
did oil pressure drop to nothing.
Etc ETc

As far as I know:

Temps got very high
Oil pressure dropped
Nasty rattles from engine (not heard running by me but suggests big ends?)
Engine ground to halt with cloud of blue/black smoke.
Now cranks over very slowly, minimal oil showing on dipstick (was full at start of journey)
Not checked for compression or oil pressure as been unable to start since recovery

Hello

I've circulated your request round the Yorkshire Midget and Sprite Club, hopefully someone may have something. If not, or indeed even if, you can contact Alan via www.masckent.org he knows of a 1500 engine somewhere in Kent.

Hope you get it sorted, I rebuilt my Midget on a student budget so I (and probably my dad!) feel your (and your son's) pain!

the guys on the BBS have come up with a few suggestions, but this one might be the best starting place which I see has been posted already. . ..good luck

If you can ask him to contact me via www.masckent.org
I can put him in touch with someone in Kent who has such if Kent is not too far.

Hi

Looks like we might be sorted.

Many thanks Alan and Dave for your assistance, picking up an engine in Gillingham en route to Le Mans next week.
