1972 midget What size is the rear number plate
Discussion
I'm not sure there is a standard size to the number plate or the backing plate
are you having B&W plates, that were probably not original to the car when new, if so the supplier will sort the size, same with if you're getting period reflective number plates - though technically they wouldn't be legal for road use
my plastic reflective rear number plate is 285mm x 204mm and the s/s backing plate slightly wider but not anywhere near as high (tall)

We'll I don't suppose the factory just randomly cut off cuts for the backing plate...so assume there was originally a standard size and part number ;-)
BBS talk is it yes but is that original size and part number still adhered to??
there are many original part numbers where the parts are not to original specification - you've seen all theses posts about newly made parts not fitting
perhaps Ashley Hinton does the original specification rear backing plates (??)
well I measured the backing plate having found it and it is as DeanoX measured. I also noticed in an old photo of the car the old yellow rear plate which was plastic seemed to underlap the backing plate. . .still. Im looking to go white front, yellow back and can now organise the plates, thanks for the help guys.

The backing plates you have and the ones you can buy new will be different size to the now "standard" number plates. (square shaped one)
They changed the size, so unless you got the original plates then the new ones won't fit into the backing plates...
Dunno why they did this but its annoying!....
