Hi,was looking into getting an MG Maestro as a daily driver - anyone got one?I`m gonna speak my mind and I love them,MG Metro`s & MG Montego`s too.Underatted cars I reckon,so any views on wether an EFI or Turbo is best I`d love to hear from you.I have a skoda as a daily and its just too good,its a great car but just not exciting in the least.I need something to tinker with and I think the MG Maestro is a car I can still play with - or am I wrong?Any replies would be welcome,nothing rude about liking british cars from the 80`s/90`s please!Cheers.
I have driven the Maestro turbo and it is a quick car. Might get classic insurance my Quantum RS Turbo only costs me <£100 currently for comp insurance. Spares are obtainable although the turbos could be tricky. If you are or know a competent mechanic this could be a usable classic. Like all BLMC cars RUST is the primary killer and finding a sound one could be a long job. Good luck to the op.
Checking with the clubs must e the best bestir the op. however finding a solid car of this era when rust was the customers problem is going to be damned tricky. Worth a try though these were very good cars in their day (ignoring the many weaknesses) and the driving position and visibility all around was excellent. Certainly could be a way to cheap(ish) fun motoring on classic cars costs.
At the POL ( Pride of Longbridge ) event on Saturday there were a good selection of MG Maestros. Some in superb condition. I owned the Petrol Turbo version of the MG Maestro for a while. Very quick even by today's standards and in the 1980s ... Only 505 left the production line to be finished by Tickford IIRC. Mine was No.234.
Had several examples of the MG Montego Turbo which I prefer the the Maestro. Still have one which now is an appreciating asset. who knew ? .. About 7,000 of these were made. Here's mine, one of the first off the production line. Still quite nippy but safely tucked away in my garage for the time being.
