I have just bought my 1st MG ZT but I have had several older MG's. I paid £1800 for the car and can't believe what value for money the car is! It is a low mileage 65k Tourer with the V6 2.5 engine in X Power grey. It drives like a BMW and is as well put together which is understandable I suppose.

I bought it unseen from the Northeast and I was pleasantly surprised how good it was when I got it. But the 1st thing I noticed was the condensation inside on the glass so as I always do when buying a car I made myself a member on the owners forum and immediately started searching wet carpets and Bob's your Uncle it was the sunroof drain pipes blocked both front and rear.

I am used to taking car interiors out so it was not that bad but the weight of the wet carpet was a shock! The floor was swimming in it and I put the carpet next to a rad in my conservatory after hoovering up as much water out of it that I could. It took 10 days to dry out and now its all back.

Once all back in I decided to buy some fascia in a maple wood effect which I was very pleased with plus the chrome surrounds and then I had the ashtray and other bits painted to match but I have left the dash original to break it up a bit. The car already had the sat nav unit fitted but no aerial from the boot so I wired that up and my iPod to the head unit while I had the centre console out.

I love driving it and we have just bought a deer-hound so it's perfect plus on the computer with mainly motorway driving I am getting 29.7 mpg, they must be one of the best bargain estate cars out there!

Looks nice and tidy, but would it still have been value for money if you weren't able to sort out the interior yourself and had to take it to a garage to sort? Would have been £££ looking at your pics. smile

Yes I agree in fairness but as everyone knows you never take into account your own labour costs when working on ya car it is a labour of love! On saying that if the car hadn't got a sunroof which lots don't then its a great bargain.

Miss my Typhoon ZT-T 180 .

It was loaded with toys and I got it for load lugging when doing up s house. There wasn't a trip to the tip where it wouldn't carry the load I asked for it.

I lived using it to tool around my home in SW Scotland. Fitted in very nicely there in a shabby old mkney sort of way.

So gad I owned it.

Wiring to the back of the car and if I recollect yeah some on the passenger side. Things like tail lights, HRW, tailgate wash/wipe, stereo amp, some ECU's, interior lights, rear electric windows, rear door/tailgate central locking, aerial, reversing sensors, rear speakers, etc.

Have been looking for a new cheap family estate and been turned on to these, looking at a local 190+ v6 with 73k on the clock.

It's very blue outside which isn't a problem but it's seats are quite blue too which is a problem. How easy to change?

Lovely car there mate, hope you enjoy many happy hours of motoring!!

I got a 2001 Anthracite ZT Mk1 in Jan, for 700 quid, 48k miles on clock, which is quite possibly daylight robbery as there is not a pit of rust, scratch or dent anywhere on the bodywork and it's like s**t off a stick!

Very rare to have an MOT test failure due to rust smile

Brake pipes are an issue however, they rot badly on the ZT so worth checking if you're considering one.

Found another one, 100k, 10 months mot, no tax, black so no garish interior, £999.

Anything obvious to look for when I have a proper poke around tomorrow morning?

Although at that price I think mentally I've already bought it!

Depends on which engine it comes with as they all have their individual needs. Best thing, as has probably been said on here, is to get over to the MG ZT/Rover 75 Forum and have a look through that. Like all cars, they have their problems, and I suppose on first looking at the forums you might get the impression that they're always going wrong, but look at it this way, there really isn't that much likelyhood of all of those problems affecting any one car. I've had a diesel ZT-T for nearly five years now and have just topped 160k. It still feels up together, it's immensely comfortable to drive and I reckon it still looks good for a nine year old car which presents me with a problem when I come to sell it. What do I replace it with that has the same quality feel to it at that kind of money?

I should be able to help as got a 190 smile

Belts - Should of been done by 100k, if not then budget £500.

VIS valves - any rattles from the manifold area then will need replacing. Not cheap, even second hand. Also, check for flat spots across the rev range. Mine was quite bad but this is easily fixed with a diy guide from an MG forum.

Brake pipes - rot quite badly where they clip in. So try and get a look underneath or check for advisories on last MOT.

Water ingress - boot can leak from a number of places but well documented and easily fixed using guides on net and a tube of silicon.

Cooling fan - resistor can fail so only high speed works. Just turn on the air con when engine is running cold and the slower speed should kick in, if not then you'll need a replacement resistor which is £15 off ebay and an hour to fit.

All the above is worst case scenario but worth knowing.

I want to replace my now dead X-Type. Cant find a decent one anywhere. Had a look at a couple recently & both were rough - one had so much water in the boot & passenger foot-well you could have re-floated the Titanic!!!

Salesman said that he would dry the car out with an industrial de-humidifier!!!! I declined the offer....

This is either the clips on the back window. the hinges or the rear light cluster. all fixable.

Shame they are left like that.
